Why Expandable Homes Often Beat Tiny Homes for Everyday Living

Tiny homes suit some people. However, many buyers run into the same issues: limited floor area long-term, fewer layout options, expensive solar upgrades, and delivery costs that appear late.

With expandable homes, you increase the footprint after delivery. As a result, these expandable homes can deliver 36–72m² without a full site build.

Expandable Cabins — the compact end of the range

If you’re searching for an expandable cabin rather than a full-size home, the 20ft is where most people land. At 36m² expanded, it gives you cabin-scale simplicity with genuine living space — and because it travels compact, it suits tight driveways and sites a full-width transportable can’t reach.

An expandable cabin works well as a sleepout, guest or family accommodation, a home office or studio, farm and staff accommodation, or a short-stay rental. It arrives finished, with a full kitchen and bathroom and double-glazed windows — you choose the layout from 1 to 3 bedrooms.

Want something smaller and simpler again? The 13m² Cabin and the Apple Cabin Pod are fixed-size cabins rather than expandable, and start from $23,500 and $34,000 incl. GST.

Optional Off-Grid Solar for Expandable Homes (Priced Upfront)

Off-grid power matters for many expandable homes, especially on lifestyle blocks or rural sites. That’s why we publish fixed-price solar bundles instead of vague estimates.

Choose the right solar bundle for your expandable home

3.5kW solar + 10kWh battery

$12,499 incl. GST

For weekend stays or light-to-moderate daily use, the 3.5kW + 10kWh bundle usually fits. It comfortably runs lights, a fridge, device charging, TV, and a water pump, especially on sunny sites with energy-smart habits.

5kW solar + 10kWh battery

$14,999 incl. GST

For full-time living, the 5kW + 10kWh bundle usually suits better because it gives you extra headroom. It handles higher daily loads with fewer compromises and leaves room for future upgrades.

Important note about off-grid power

A home is off-grid capable when the solar and battery system is sized to your appliances, daily usage, site conditions and backup requirements. Off-grid solar runs daily essentials well. However, high-draw electric heating (large heaters, electric ovens, continuous high-power hot water) can overload any off-grid setup. If those loads matter to you, we’ll recommend the right configuration upfront.
